Database evolution for the study of social interaction: Designing annotations for long-term usability

This workshop was designed to address issues related to the ‘longevity’ of annotations of large databases such as TALKBANK or CLAPI (Corpus de Langue Parlée en Interaction), which can be used for research on social interaction. More specifically, it asked: What are the challenges and best practices related to designing annotation schemes in view of the preservation and usability of data in the long-term, thus putting the evolution of databases at the centre.  During the first half-day annotation issues (standards, reusability, etc.) in relation to database development (adaptability, expandability, user needs, etc.) were addressed. The second half-day was designed as a practical workshop in which the analytical possibilities (and limitations) of selected interactional databases were illustrated and discussed, thereby tracing the whole process form annotation to results.

The event was organised by Simona Pekarek Doehler (University of Neuchâtel) and Jérôme Jacquin (University of Lausanne) on behalf of CHORD-talk-in-interaction. It took place at the University of Neuchâtel from Monday, January 15th, 2024, 13:30h – 17:15h, to Tuesday, January 16th, 2024, 09:00h – 12:00h. The event could be attended in person and via Webex.
